Korea Submits Two Major Traditions to UNESCO

The Korea Heritage Service just announced that it has submitted two nomination dossiers to UNESCO headquarters for the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Insam Tradition: More Than Just a Root

The nomination for ginseng is officially called “The Insam Tradition: Knowledge, Skills and Cultural Practices Related to Ginseng in the Republic of Korea.” And honestly, it’s SO much more than just growing and processing the root! The tradition emerged from a lifestyle shaped by respect for nature and the pursuit of well-being and longevity. It includes cultivation skills, processing techniques, widespread beliefs, rituals, legends, recipes, and even gift-giving traditions! 🌿

인삼 신청서의 공식 명칭은 “인삼 전통: 대한민국 인삼과 관련된 지식, 기술 및 문화적 관행”입니다. 솔직히 단순히 뿌리를 재배하고 가공하는 것 이상입니다! 이 전통은 자연에 대한 존중과 건강 및 장수 추구로 형성된 생활양식에서 비롯되었습니다. 재배 기술, 가공 기법, 널리 퍼진 믿음, 의례, 전설, 요리법, 심지어 선물 전통까지 포함됩니다!

Taekwondo: A Dojang-Centered Training Tradition

Taekwondo’s nomination focuses on the dojang — the training halls where instructors and practitioners train together and cultivate mutual respect and cooperation. It’s not just about the kicks and punches! The practice fosters community bonds through shared training, passing down techniques, codes of conduct, and values from one generation to the next. Practitioners of ALL age groups engage in taekwondo, and some eventually become instructors themselves! 🥋

태권도 신청서는 도장에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 도장은 사범과 수련생이 함께 훈련하며 상호 존중과 협력을 기르는 수련 공간입니다. 단순히 발차기와 주먹질에 관한 것이 아닙니다! 함께 훈련하며 공동체 유대를 형성하고, 기술, 행동 규범, 가치관을 세대에서 세대로 전수합니다. 모든 연령대의 수련생이 태권도에 참여하며, 일부는 결국 사범이 되기도 합니다!

Hope for a Joint North-South Inscription

Here’s something really interesting — the Korea Heritage Service is hoping for a joint North-South inscription of taekwondo, following the example of the traditional Korean wrestling practice of ssireum! North Korea submitted its own nomination in March 2024 for “Taekwon-Do, traditional martial art in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” which is currently under review. A joint inscription would be such a meaningful moment for Korean culture and unity! 🤝

정말 흥미로운 점이 있습니다. 국가유산청은 전통 한국 씨름의 선례를 따라 태권도의 남북 공동 등재를 희망하고 있습니다! 북한은 2024년 3월 “태권도, 조선민주주의인민공화국의 전통 무술”이라는 별도의 신청서를 제출했으며 현재 심사 중입니다. 공동 등재는 한국 문화와 통일에 매우 의미 있는 순간이 될 것입니다!

When Will the Decision Be Made?

So when will we know the results? After review by the UNESCO Secretariat and evaluation by expert committees, the final decision on inscription will be made at the 23rd session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2028. That’s a bit of a wait, but these traditions have been around for centuries — they can wait a little longer! Fingers crossed for Korean culture! 🤞📅
