Korean Words Taking Over the Oxford English Dictionary
The power of Korean culture is now literally written in the dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added 48 Korean loanwords, with 33 of them added in just the last four years.
한국 문화의 힘이 이제 사전에 공식적으로 기록되고 있습니다. 옥스퍼드 영어 사전(OED)에는 현재 48개의 한국어 외래어가 등재되어 있으며, 그중 33개가 지난 4년 동안 추가되었습니다.
The Kimbap Revolution
“A Korean dish consisting of cooked rice and other ingredients wrapped in a sheet of seaweed and cut into bite-sized slices.” This is how the OED officially defines “kimbap.” The word appears in English at a frequency of about 0.01 times per million words and has rapidly increased to 0.03 times this year.

The Hallyu Effect on Language
The OED clearly states that new English loanwords from Korean are the result of the Korean Wave. K-pop, K-drama, K-beauty, K-food, K-style — everything is getting prefixed with K- as South Korea’s popular culture continues to rise internationally.

From 1976 to 2024: A Timeline
“Hangul” was the first Korean word to appear in the OED in 1976. That same year, “kimchi,” “makgeolli,” and “gisaeng” were added. In September 2021, 26 Korean words were added at once, including “aegyo,” “banchan,” “bulgogi,” “chimaek,” “hallyu,” “hanbok,” and “kimbap.”

The Latest Additions
In December 2024, seven more Korean words made their way into the OED: “dalgona,” “hyung,” “jjigae,” “maknae,” “noraebang,” “pansori,” and “tteokbokki.” The OED even referenced “Squid Game” when explaining “dalgona.”
