A Concerning Government Study
Alarming New Data on Youth Smoking Trends
This is really concerning news, everyone! π A new government study shows that Korean adolescent smoking rates are climbing dramatically as students move from middle school to high school. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has been tracking 5,051 students since they were in sixth grade back in 2019, and the latest findings collected between March and October 2025 reveal some troubling patterns.

The Numbers Tell a Shocking Story
Letβs look at the data because itβs pretty eye-opening! π Among students now aged 16-17 (11th graders), 9.59% reported having tried smoking. Thatβs a HUGE jump from just 3.93% in ninth grade! The increase during high school years was nearly 3 percentage points per year β almost matching the total increase across all three middle school years combined. And when these same kids were still in elementary school? Only 0.35% had tried smoking.

Gender Differences in Current Smoking
Hereβs another important finding! π¬ Among current smokers (those who smoked in the last 30 days), boys showed a rate of 6.13% while girls were at 2.17%. Boys are still more likely to smoke overall, but thereβs an interesting shift happening when it comes to HOW teens are smoking these days.

E-Cigarettes Are a Major Factor
Plot twist β electronic cigarettes are changing the game, especially for girls! β‘ Among female students, liquid-based e-cigarette use (1.54%) actually EXCEEDED conventional cigarette use (1.33%)! Overall figures showed 3.47% for e-cigarettes and 2.58% for traditional cigarettes. This trend suggests that e-cigarettes are becoming a major gateway for teen smoking.

Environment Matters More Than You Think
The study found that environment plays a HUGE role! π₯ Students whose friends or family members smoked β or who had permissive attitudes toward smoking β showed meaningfully higher rates of smoking initiation. Earlier exposure also correlated with earlier smoking. Basically, who you hang out with and what your family thinks about smoking really matters!

Other Health Indicators Are Also Declining
Smoking isnβt the only concern! π The survey also tracked alcohol consumption, skipping breakfast, nutrition, physical activity, and smartphone use. Unfortunately, ALL of these indicators showed worsening trends as students got older. It paints a picture of overall declining health habits during adolescence.

What This Means for the Future
The study still has three more years to go, and the agency has managed to retain 80% of original participants β impressive for a long-term study! π A KDCA official emphasized: βBecause adolescent habits can shape health across the entire life course, coordinated efforts by schools, families and local communities are essential.β This data will be crucial for building better health policies for young people!
