What Changed?
The Stress Generation Has Shifted
Something significant has changed in Korea! π For years, younger Koreans in their 20s and 30s were considered the most stressed generation. But new data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency shows a dramatic shift: people in their 40s now record the HIGHEST stress levels in daily life at 35.1%. Thatβs more than eight percentage points higher than a decade ago! The anxieties of midlife have officially eclipsed those of young adulthood.

The Numbers by Age Group
Letβs look at the full picture! π The 2024 survey of about 10,000 people found that 25.9% of adults reported feeling βvery muchβ or βmuchβ stress. By age group, 40s led at 35.1%, followed closely by 30s at 34.7%, and 19-29 year-olds at 30.3%. Compare this to 2014 when people in their 30s were the most stressed at 34%, showing how the burden has clearly shifted upward.

Gender Gap: Women Are More Stressed
The gender difference is striking! π©βπΌ Overall, women reported higher stress levels than men β 28.6% compared with 23.3%. Among men, those in their 40s recorded the highest rate at a staggering 36.3%. Among women, the highest rate was actually in their 30s at 41.5%! Nearly half of all women in their 30s feel significantly stressed. Thatβs an alarming number!

Workplace Pressure Is the Top Culprit
Whatβs causing all this stress? πΌ For men in their 40s, the workplace was the number one source, cited by a massive 46.6%! But hereβs the fascinating gender difference: while work stressed women in their 30s the most (28.2%), women in their 40s cited concerns about parents or children as their top factor at 27.6%. Only 4.2% of men in their 40s cited family as their main stressor. The burden clearly falls differently!

Expert Analysis: Why the 40s Are Struggling Now
Professor βLim Myung-hoβ from Dankook Universityβs Department of Psychology explains the shift! π§ βIn the past, working hard was often enough to support a family, but that is far more difficult today. The economy has become more challenging, job stability is harder to ensure, and fears of AI-driven job losses are growing. Workplace competition is far more intense than a decade ago.β

The Hidden Burden on Korean Women
βLimβ also highlighted why women face unique pressures! π©βπ§βπ¦ βIn Korea, issues such as raising children and responsibilities involving parents or in-laws tend to be far more competitive and demanding than in many other countries.β Korean women in their 40s carry an invisible double burden β managing both career expectations and intense family responsibilities that society often places squarely on their shoulders.

Time to Support Koreaβs Most Stressed Generation
The message is clear: middle-aged Koreans need more support! πͺ With stagnant wages, rising household debt, AI anxiety, and intense workplace competition, the 40s have become the hardest decade. Society needs to recognize that stress isnβt just a βyoung personβs problemβ anymore. Better workplace policies, mental health resources, and shared family responsibilities are essential! π
